Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) Training

Prevent Accidents by Learning to Control Hazardous Energy Sources

Unexpected Equipment Startup Is a Leading Cause of Preventable Workplace Injuries

An unexpected equipment startup can lead to serious injury or even death. What if your team had the tools and training to eliminate that risk? Lockout/tagout (LOTO) training helps workers understand how to control hazardous energy during maintenance and servicing activities. It’s not just a regulatory requirement, it’s a life-saving best practice that prevents an estimated 120 fatalities and 50,000 injuries per year.

When machines are improperly shut down, releasing electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, chemical, or thermal energy can result in catastrophic accidents. With the proper training, your employees can recognize hazards and follow safety protocols that protect themselves and others. That’s the power of lockout tagout training: turning your workforce into a proactive safety force.

About Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) Training

LOTO is a critical safety training program designed to prevent the unexpected release of hazardous energy while servicing equipment. OSHA’s Control of Hazardous Energy standard (29 CFR 1910.147) requires employers to implement energy control procedures specific to their machines and to ensure that all workers understand them.

While some companies rely on general guidance, proper LOTO training covers machine-specific processes, teaches how to isolate energy sources properly, and reinforces best practices through hands-on scenarios.

Your team will walk away with the knowledge and confidence to:

  • Identify and isolate all energy sources
  • Apply and verify lockout/tagout devices
  • Communicate LOTO protocols across the workforce

Lockout/Tagout training equips students with the knowledge and hands-on skills to control hazardous energy safely. Our program supports both new employees and experienced technicians through instructor-led sessions, real-world scenarios, and practical assessments.

By the end of training, participants will be confident in performing OSHA-compliant LOTO procedures, from identifying energy hazards to safely locking out equipment and verifying isolation.

Our Training Program

Our LOTO training program is tailored to help businesses stay compliant and keep workers safe. From basic instruction to advanced evaluations, we provide a flexible, structured experience that meets each team’s needs.

This training is designed for both Affected and Authorized Employees, as defined by OSHA:

  • AFFECTED: An employee whose job requires him/her to operate or use a machine or equipment on which servicing or maintenance is being performed under lockout or tagout, or whose job requires him/her to work in an area in which such servicing or maintenance is being performed.
  • AUTHORIZED: A person who locks out or tags out machines or equipment to perform servicing or maintenance on that machine or equipment. An affected employee becomes an authorized employee when that employee’s duties include performing servicing or maintenance covered under this section.

Each course includes:

  • Establish the purpose for LOTO.
  • Identify the key components of an energy control program.
  • Identify the six main elements that should be contained in lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Identify key elements of a periodic inspection of the energy control device to restore energy and equipment.
  • Explain group lockout/tagout.
  • Identify steps to perform testing or positioning on a repaired piece of equipment.
  • Recognize the importance of best practices for the most effective lockout/tagout program implementation and operation.
  • Be able to apply various LOTO devices on a mock prop.

Training is enhanced by hands-on exercises using actual lockout/tagout devices and simulations, giving your team a real-world understanding of safe shutdown and energy control.

What to Expect

Our mission is simple: help organizations eliminate preventable injuries by providing workforce training that sticks. Whether it’s a technician locking out a press or a supervisor overseeing compliance, every participant will gain actionable skills they can use immediately.

Our courses serve various industries and roles, from maintenance workers, machine operators, safety managers, and HR personnel. Everyone plays a part in a successful LOTO program, and our training ensures they’re prepared.

Your organization will be positioned for long-term success and compliance with training tailored to each employee’s authorized and affected status.

Our Classes

Our Lockout/Tagout training courses are led by experienced, OSHA-compliant instructors certified to teach LOTO and related safety procedures.

To promote a high-quality learning environment, our training follows optimal student-to-instructor ratios that support individualized instruction and hands-on participation. The ideal student-to-instructor ratio is 6:1, ensuring that each participant receives the attention they need, with a maximum of 20 students per instructor in general sessions. For performance evaluations and hands-on skills assessments, we reduce the ratio to 2:1 to ensure mastery of techniques and accurate knowledge retention.

We also maintain a proper student-to-equipment ratio to support meaningful interaction with the tools used during training. The ideal ratio is four students per set of LOTO equipment, with a maximum ratio of six students per set, which allows all participants to gain direct experience.

By practicing with actual LOTO equipment in realistic scenarios, students build the confidence and capability to implement lockout/tagout procedures safely and correctly in their workplaces.

Certifications

To receive Lockout/Tagout certification, students must complete all training modules and demonstrate proficiency through a performance evaluation. Successful participants will receive an official AOTC certification card, including their course completion date.

LOTO certification is valid for one year. To maintain compliance and competency, renewal training and recertification must be completed before expiration. A Recognition of Participation (ROP) is available for all attendees, regardless of test results.

Up-to-date certification ensures your team is prepared to meet LOTO OSHA standards and respond to potential energy hazards with precision and safety.
