What Is HAZWOPER Training?

The HAZWOPER standard was created by OSHA and requires employers to train certain workers to safely manage hazardous waste operations.

Employees involved in clean-up or other emergency response efforts must be provided with additional training. There are also HAZWOPER training courses specifically for supervisors.

Once employees complete the appropriate HAZWOPER training, they will receive their certification. Currently, there are 40-hour, 24-hour, 8-hour, and supervisor training courses available.

In addition to the initial training, employers must provide their staff with annual refresher training courses. While a portion of this training can be computer-based, participants must be allowed to speak directly to a certified instructor.

This Q&A session is designed to clear up any confusion regarding HAZWOPER procedures. HAZWOPER refresher training must also include a hands-on portion.

Who Needs Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Training?

The OSHA HAZWOPER Standard outlines five different groups that are subject to Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response training requirements. HAZWOPER provisions apply to employees who will potentially be exposed to any hazardous substances and participate in any of the following five operations:

  • Clean-up operations at uncontrolled sites
  • Corrective actions at controlled sites
  • Voluntary clean-up operations
  • Hazardous waste handling at treatment, storage, or disposal facilities
  • Emergency response operations for release or threats of release of hazardous substances

If your staff is tasked with any of these responsibilities, they must receive HAZWOPER training.

What Is HAZWOPER Certification?

A HAZWOPER training certification indicates that recipients have completed a Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response course. To obtain certification, participants must complete the requisite educational hours and satisfactorily perform hands-on tasks under the supervision of an instructor.

HAZWOPER certs are valid for one year and require annual refresher training. If your staff fails to complete the designated training by the assigned deadline, they may have to retake the original HAZWOPER course.

Fortunately, AOTC makes it incredibly easy to complete this training by offering on-site instructional services.

What Is 8-Hour HAZWOPER Training?

There are several different 8-hour HAZWOPER training blocks, and the most common is the annual 8-hour refresher. During this course, participants will review information covered during the initial training, and they will also receive instruction on any modifications or updates to the HAZWOPER standard.

In addition to the refresher course, there is also an 8-hour HAZWOPER supervisor training course. This course is designed for individuals who will supervise the handling, storage, or disposal of hazardous materials on job sites. The supervisor certification is designed for construction and general industrial purposes.

Like the standard HAZWOPER training course, the supervisor certification requires 8-hours of annual refresher training.

What Is 24-Hour HAZWOPER Training?

The 24-hour HAZWOPER training course is designed for employees who might work with or be exposed to hazardous materials on occasion. This course is not appropriate for employees involved in hazardous material clean-up or emergency response.

The 24-hour HAZWOPER training course gives participants a broader overview of hazardous material safety. As with other HAZWOPER training courses, the 24-hour program requires participants to complete an 8-hour annual refresher.

What Is 40-Hour HAZWOPER Training?

The primary HAZWOPER training offering is the 40-hour course. This course is designed for employees engaged in any of the above activities. All employees who will be involved with hazardous waste handling, storage, clean-up, or emergency response activities must complete this course.

During the course, instructors will inform participants about safe handling practices, common workplace hazards, and how to respond to a hazmat emergency. This training includes hands-on field experience under the supervision of a certified instructor.

Providing your staff with HAZWOPER training is the only way to ensure OSHA compliance and mitigate their risk of workplace injury.
