Trenching & Excavation Training

Stay Safe in the Soil, Protect Lives with OSHA-Compliant Trenching & Excavation Training

One Misstep in a Trench Can Cost a Life

Trench collapses are among the deadliest hazards in construction, but they’re entirely preventable. Alpha-Omega Training and Compliance, Inc. (AOTC) provides trenching and excavation training to help crews identify hazards, adhere to safety protocols, and fulfill regulatory requirements. From spoil piles to shoring systems, workers gain the knowledge to plan, inspect, and work safely in and around excavation sites. Whether your team needs general awareness or Competent Person training, AOTC delivers practical instruction that builds confidence and saves lives.

About Trenching/Excavation Training

Trenching and excavation training prepares workers to recognize and respond to one of construction’s most dangerous hazards—trench collapses. OSHA mandates this training to ensure crews can identify risks, apply proper protective systems, and follow established safety protocols.

Covering topics like soil classification, shoring and shielding, site inspections, and compliance standards, the training is essential for both workers in the trench and those responsible for overseeing safety. With the right knowledge, teams can work more confidently, avoid violations, and reduce the risk of serious incidents on site.

Our Training Program

AOTC’s trenching and excavation training is designed to meet OSHA Subpart P requirements, blending regulatory knowledge with real-world application. Training covers key topics such as soil classification, protective systems, access and egress, atmospheric testing, daily inspections, and emergency procedures.

We offer two options:

  • Trenching and Excavation Awareness (4 hours): For workers who enter or work near trenches and need to understand core hazards and safety protocols.
  • Competent Person Training (8 hours): For supervisors, foremen, or others responsible for identifying hazards, conducting inspections, and enforcing safety measures.

Led by experienced instructors, each course combines technical guidance with field-based examples to prepare your team for safe trench operations.

What to Expect

Our program is designed for real-world field conditions and blends classroom learning with applied trench safety training, including mock inspections and protective system planning.

You can expect:

  • Experienced instructors with trenching and excavation field experience.
  • Small class sizes for individualized guidance.
  • Practical exercises, case studies, and mock inspections.
  • Printed training materials and regulatory handouts.
  • Certificates are issued upon completion.

All training aligns with OSHA excavation standards and meets documentation requirements for jobsite inspections and audits.

Our Classes

Our trenching and excavation courses are taught by knowledgeable and experienced, certified instructors specializing in excavation safety. We keep our classes small and hands-on to promote knowledge retention and regulatory confidence.

  • Maximum Class Size: 10 participants per instructor
  • Awareness Training Duration: 4 hours
  • Competent Person Training Duration: 8 hours

Hands-on activities, hazard recognition exercises, and real-world examples reinforce key concepts. We also maintain low student-to-instructor ratios during critical application segments to ensure an accurate understanding of hazard assessments, soil classification, and protective systems.
Whether you need trench and excavation safety awareness or advanced excavation competent person training, our 4 and 8-hour courses provide the structure and expertise to meet OSHA mandates.

Certifications

Upon completion, trainees will receive a certificate recognizing their successful participation in OSHA trenching and excavation training, qualifying them to perform or oversee trenching operations safely and effectively.

Competent Person Training participants will receive documentation verifying they have completed OSHA-aligned training to identify hazards and implement corrective measures.

Awareness Training participants receive a certificate of completion suitable for general safety record-keeping and compliance purposes.
